Baseball Opens GLIAC Tournament With Convincing 14-0 Win Over Hillsdale

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Timberwolves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as the first three batters reached to begin the rally. Connor Foley led off with a walk, David Vinsky then singled to put two aboard for Ryan McClelland. In his first at bat in more than eight games, McClelland laced a single up the middle to score Foley. The next batter, Daniel Pulver hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Vinsky, and the Timberwolves led 2-0.
  • The Timberwolves picked up right where they left off in the bottom of the second. With two outs and the bases empty, Travis Janes singled sharply to center. After advancing on a wild pitch to second, Connor Foley smashed a double down the left field line to score Janes easily. The next batter, David Vinsky, returned the favor with a double that scored Connor Foley and again, the Timberwolves plated two runs in the frame to grab a 4-0 lead.
  • After a scoreless third for both teams, The Timberwolves again did their damage with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Foley singled with two outs and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. David Vinsky then doubled for the second time of the game to score Foley and Northwood's lead grew to 5-0.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Northwood broke the game wide open with a four spot to go up 9-0. Foley and Vinsky both single with one out, followed by a McClelland walk to load the bases for Daniel Pulver who hit his second sacrifice fly of the game for the first run of the inning. The next batter, Javier Martinez belted a towering three-run homer over the left centerfield wall to plate four inning for the Timberwolves.
  • Northwood wasn't done. The bottom of the seventh saw the Timberwolves explode for five more runs and extend the lopsided score to 14-0 in favor of Northwood. David Vinsky continued his huge day with an RBI single, Pulver hit a two RBI double with the bases loaded, and Martinez produced his fourth RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly.
  • Tyler Jandron was electric and efficient on the mound for the entire contest. The reigning GLIAC pitcher of the year went the distance for the complete game shutout, allowed just two hits, and did let a Hillsdale base runner reach second base until the ninth inning, as the Timberwolves cruised to a convincing 14-0 win in the opening round of the GLIAC tournament.

GAME NOTES

  • This is the third complete game for Tyler Jandron – a Northwood single season record. All three complete games have been complete game shutouts. Jandron is now tied for the all-time career shutout record with Jim Kurlinski.
  • David Vinsky is now the single season record holder for RBIs after his 3RBI performance. Vinsky now has 54 RBIs and passed Clay Rosette who had 51 in 2008.
  • Vinsky's two doubles on the day add to his single season record for doubles in a season (25) and extra base hits in a season (33). 
  • Foley's five runs scored are the most by any Timberwolf this season. Foley leads the GLIAC in runs scored now with 65 on the season.
